Stewart Chase

“For those who believe, no proof is necessary. For those who don't believe, no proof is possible.”

Other quotes from Criminal Minds here.

I just heard this quote used on a "Criminal Minds" TV show and I looked it up.

However, I believe that the quote is a take off of a quote attributed to Stanislaw Barski, a European man who I think was talking about UFOs.

“For those who understand,
No explanation is needed.
For those who do NOT understand,
No explanation is possible.”

It may be the other way around as the quote from Stewart Chase is from a book published in 1929.

If you know the proper source for the quote, please share.

I, too, heard it on Criminal Minds and liked it enough to put it here.

Many thanks.

I have seen this quote printed across the screen before the start of the 1943 film, Song of Bernadette-the film about the appearance of Our Lady of Lourdes.

And it may all come from a zen proverb that says "If you understand, things are just as they are; if you do not understand, things are just as they are."

It is a quotation by Saint Bernadette regarding the apparition of the Blessed Mother in Lourdes.

Thank goodness for repeats. Saw this episode for the first time. MaBlair, you hit the nail on the head..you all did. It must have started with zen.. think about it.

Let's go simple. Why is a Leaf green?

Zen: The flow of all things to gain inner peace as we see now in modern designers. "If you understand, things are just as they are (you accept the leaf is green because thats how God made it.); if you do not understand (sure, it's green, but why?), things are just as they are (okay, it's green, but since I don't have the "WHY", I don't have to accept it)."

Barski: “For those who understand (I'm smart enough to GET that the leaf is green),
No explanation is needed.
For those who do NOT understand (Seriously..go take biology..chlorophyll explains it),
No explanation is possible (which is what his career is about - "If you understand there are UFO's, I don't have to explain myself; Yet if you are ignorant and don't understand, it doesn't matter how many times I try to.”)", no explanation is possible.

Chase: “For those who believe (I belive the Leaf is green because I understand what chlorophyll is), no proof is necessary. For those who don't believe (which I accept, because belief is a choice, not an understanding which is an attack on one's self), no proof is possible.” Considering he's a socialist, it's no wonder he subscribes to an individuals belief and acceptance theory.

Whomever you feel most drawn to Ontheroad, if you think about it, they are all "proper". Instead of the "Who's right?" question we ask (including in our personal lives and at work, etc), ask "What and Why might they have said that, and what do the actual words mean?" Lets educate ourselves on who the person was that said it, and we'll likely never need to ask "Who's right"....
